You can make money selling fish in several ways. If you live near a fishing fleet, you could buy fresh fish at a fish market and resell them, perhaps from the back of a van in your area. This is usually a competitive business though and there may already be someone doing this who won't appreciate you muscling in.
Another way to sell fish is to sell them live and not as food. To do this you will need to breed the fish and sell off the young fish. This can be fairly lucrative if you are involved in rare or unusual breeds of fish. You will need a lot of necessary equipment up front though, and it might be easier to do this if you already keep fish as a hobby. This way you can make your hobby pay for itself.
The best way to make money selling fish is to start small and build up. There's a lot to learn and trying to learn it all at once is a sure recipe for disaster. If keeping fish is your hobby it will be a lot easier, but here also you should walk before you try to run. Build up the business gradually at a pace you can easily cope with.
Start by buying inexpensive fish to breed. These are usually also easy to work with and maintain. You can do this in two possible ways; you can buy additional small tanks, or you can buy a very large tank. There may be price considerations, and there certainly will be cleaning and maintenance considerations too.
Buying several smaller tanks does have its advantages, however, as you will be spreading the fish around in different places. If there is disease at any time it will be much easier to contain it if you have several tanks. In this way you can limit the damage much easier.
One downside is that there will be a lot more cleaning of the individual tanks to do and more overall maintenance too, but spreading the risk over a number of relatively small tanks is probably your best option.
You will need at the very least two tanks in any case as the fry will have to be isolated. If your adult fish are breeding regularly you will need a range of tanks for the fry, the juveniles and so on at different stages of development. This also brings up the question of space. Do you have enough space to house this level of operation?
Don't try to breed lots of species, but rather concentrate on one breed, at least at the beginning. Research the breed thoroughly. Know its habits in every way, and do this before you buy them to start breeding. You need to think of every possible eventuality, and even then you will miss a few, but at least you will be reasonably prepared.
When you have successfully bred the fish and they are ready to be sold, try putting a small classified ad in your local newspaper to gauge the response. Increase your range a bit wider if that doesn't bring enough response, and keep widening until you have sold them all.
In order to make money selling fish there's quite a lot of work involved, but if you enjoy working with fish, it can be a lot of fun too.
