To make money selling eggs you will need to have a ready supply of eggs. One way is to have the chickens that lay the eggs. Then you are in control to a large degree. Another way is to buy the eggs from someone as cheaply as possible and resell them for a profit. Doing it this way you will have little control, though it can work well just the same.

Let's assume you want to own the chickens that lay the eggs that you will sell. This isn't particularly difficult. Chickens are easy to raise and keep. They don't ask for much and they aren't a nuisance. In fact, they can be quite endearing, in a funny kind of chickeny way. Here's how to raise chickens and make money selling eggs.

1. Plan out where you will keep your chickens. If you have a large back yard, for example, that should be enough. Check with local planning laws that you are allowed to keep chickens. Remember also that chickens are things that can be stolen, by foxes and humans alike, so make sure that the chicken coop is secure and safe.

2. Decide whether to get chickens on the point of egg laying, or as baby chicks. There are pros and cons to each. If you get chickens at the age where they will start to lay eggs, you will have no waiting time and can start in production almost immediately. If you get baby chicks, it will take much longer to get eggs, about five months. However, chickens ready to lay eggs will cost a lot more to buy than baby chicks.

3. Decide how many chickens you can keep. This will be partly decided by the space you have. Allow at least two square feet per fully grown hen to avoid an overcrowded situation. You probably need at least a dozen chickens able to lay to start with, but three or four dozen, or more, would be better.

4. You can buy a chicken coop, or you can get the plans and materials and build your own. A pre-bought chicken coop will not be particularly cheap, but shouldn't be too expensive. However, it isn't difficult to build a sturdy coop. There are plenty of plans available online with instructions of how to put it all together.

5. You will also need to make a run for the chickens. This should be set up so that the chickens can leave the coop and be in the run immediately, and not escape elsewhere. Make the run as big as you can and fence it in with chicken wire, leaving no gaps that a fox can get through, or a chicken can get out of. Install laying boxes in the coop, one box for every three or four hens (they won't all try to lay eggs at the same time).

6. You will need to get books on how to rear chickens, as this article cannot do that topic full justice. There are plenty of websites and books available online that can tell you about this.

7. Find a market for your eggs. Local people will probably buy them up as fast as they can get them. Everyone loves fresh free range eggs. Do some promotion and marketing. Start locally and expand as and when you can. Selling the eggs is probably the easiest bit of the whole venture.
