You can make money selling DVDs. However, you may find it difficult to find DVDs in quantity that are of say, the latest Hollywood movie. If you just sell old second hand DVDs, you may also find that regular supply is a difficulty. The good news is that there are ways around all this.
1. If you have a large stack of DVDs that you own, and that you are willing to sell, this could be your initial stock. How fast you run out of this stock depends on how many DVDs you have and how quickly you can find buyers.
2. You can advertise for DVDs in good condition. You would have to pay for them of course, but this is simply a business overhead. You can advertise in local newspapers, for example, and if you are willing to pay a reasonable amount, you should get more stock this way.
3. The best way to get a really good saleable stock of DVDs at rock bottom prices is to find a liquidator. This is a company that buys up surplus stock, bankrupt stock, and stock from companies going out of business. They get the stock very cheap, and they can therefore sell it to you cheap too.
You will probably have to buy in a certain amount of bulk that will be determined by the liquidator company, and not just the odd DVD or two. But that is an overhead that's worthwhile as you will have very high quality cheap stock. Do a search on Google for "liquidator." You can narrow your search by looking for "DVD liquidation," for example.
4. You will need space to store your liquidated DVD stock. A reasonable sized garage should be enough space, but check this before buying. You don't want your liquidated DVDs being to be delivered just as you discover that you don't have enough space to store them.
5. You can sell your DVDs through many outlets. Ebay, the auction website, is usually a difficult place to compete with when it comes to item like DVDs. If you have good quality liquidated stock, you should be able to compete easily.
Check out your competitors and see what they are doing and what they are charging. Then position yourself to be competitive while not charging too little or too much. You should aim to become known as someone who gives value for money. Treat your customers like gold dust. They are the only reason you are in business, so never forget it.
6. You can and should set up your own website. Buy a domain name that reflects your business. Use the free Google keyword tool to research suitable keywords you could use as a domain name.
When you use a keyword phrase that people are searching for as a domain name, it will be highlighted in the search engine results. This makes your website appear more of an authority in the eyes of the searcher. Google likes it a lot too.
You can use the free WordPress software to make your website. Choose a suitable theme, list your DVDs and install a payment processor such as PayPal.
7. Keep busy if you hope to succeed. Always have several auctions on the go at Ebay. Try Craigslist too as an outlet. Promote your website relentlessly every day. Websites will only be successful if they are constantly marketed.
