You can make money selling door to door. This is also known as cold calling because you are meeting your potential customer cold without any prior contact. This is not for everyone. Many people are too embarrassed to do door to door selling, but for those who take to it easily and enjoy doing it, it can be the perfect way to make money.

There are some things to look out for, however. While most of the advertisements you will be checking are genuine, not all of them are. Or they may be half genuine, in that they are not telling you the whole truth.

The best advice is to only deal with the companies that tell you everything you need to know up front. That way you are not in for an unwelcome surprise further down the line. It's always best to start off on the right foot if possible, and when you set out to make money selling door to door, you can.

1. You need a fairly thick skin when you embark on a door to door selling job. You will get rejections. You will get the occasional abuse, and you will be glared at, shouted at and have doors slammed in your face. However, you will also meet kindness, warmth and friendliness, and because of that, you will make sales too.

2. Check out the adverts in local newspapers. Only follow up with genuine adverts. These will clearly state that the job is door to door selling, and not some kind of hazy thing like "management opportunity in the field."

The ad will also clearly state who the employer is, where the business is located, the street and number, who your employer will be, what your pay will be, broken down by the retainer wage and the commission rate paid over and above the retainer wage.

3. When you enquire about a job by telephone, always confirm the details listed in step number 2 above and make sure the person on the other end of the line says that all the details stated in the ad are correct.

4. You should also ask if you will be required to purchase anything in order to do the job. Sometimes applicants have to buy a "working kit" of orders to sell in order to get started. This is not a good idea. Every reputable company will freely supply the items that you will be required to sell door to door.

5. Expect to get straight answers from the person you speak to when you enquire about the door to door job that is being advertised. If the other person seems to be evading your questions, ask them why. If they are genuine they will have nothing to hide.

6. It could be a good idea to wait a couple of weeks to check out the adverts for door to door jobs. If an advert for a job appears every day, or every week, it could be a strong indication that there is a large turnover of applicants. This would suggest that those who take the job are not satisfied with something. You most likely will encounter the same problems if you apply.

7. Always avoid group interviews if you can. It is near to impossible to be treated as an individual in a group interview. Most genuine respected companies don't conduct group interviews anyway.
