You can make money selling digital photos. There is always a demand for stock photos of all kinds, and from all countries too. As more and more websites are put online, more and more photos are needed to complement the web content. Making money through your digital camera is an easy and enjoyable way to earn money.

1. To make money selling digital photos you will of course need a digital camera. The quality of the camera is not too important, inasmuch as it doesn't have to be a really expensive one. But with reasonably priced digital cameras now featuring at least a 10 megapixel resolution, there's really no excuse for having a comparatively high quality camera for the task.

2. Unless you have a really good cell phone, don't use it for selling digital photos. Most cell phones have a camera with a resolution of around 2 to 4 megapixels. This is good enough for the family photo album, but not for serious photography.

Some of the better - and more expensive - cell phones can have camera resolutions approaching 8 to 10 megapixels, which is good, but you really are better off using a dedicated camera.

Cell phones try to be all things to their users (phone, MP3 player, video camera/player, organizer, etc). Cameras just try to be good cameras and (usually) nothing else. Get the very best camera you can!

3. Photos sell best when there are people in them. You can't sell photos with just anyone in it; you need a signed model release form so that the person or persons in the photo do not have a claim to any earnings the photo may generate.

Make up suitable release forms - a search on Google for "model release form" will yield results you can legally use. Whenever you take a photo that features people prominently placed, you will need their signature on a form if you intend to sell the photo.

You will also in most cases need a release for to be signed when you feature buildings in your photos. A general view across a city is different; you can't be expected to get signed release forms from every building owner! But if a building is the main feature in the photo, you are well advised to get a signed release form.

4. Before you try to take photos to sell, research what sells best. Don't try to fit your photos into the market. Discover what the market wants through good research, and then give it to them.

5. You are well advised to have good image editing software. PhotoShop is the industry standard software for this, but Gimp can achieve results that are every bit as good, and Gimp is a free download.

Take the time to practice using the software. You will use it for cropping where necessary, color, shadow and density adjustment where necessary, as well as sharpening if required. In short, image editing software can make a good photo great, and can even make a mediocre photo good sometimes. Don't expect miracles though.

5. You will sell your digital photos to stock photography websites such as iStockphoto. They have a "Sell Stock" button on their main page. Just follow the instructions from there. Other stock photography websites operate in a similar manner. A search on Google should reveal the best stock photography websites you can use.

When you sell your photos to a stock photography website, you will receive a percentage of the profits when someone purchases the photo. This is why your photos need to be of very good quality if you want to make money selling digital photos.
