Lots of people make money selling ads. All newspapers and magazines do. TV stations and radio stations make money selling ads too. Think of all the billboards that dominate the roadsides, it's a way of selling ads. Selling ads isn't hard to do, and you can do it too.

Next time you buy a newspaper, stop to think about all the things that go into getting that newspaper in print. Then think about the tiny sum of money you just paid for the newspaper. It doesn't add up. But, when you factor in all the advertising space the newspaper sells, then it adds up with plenty left over for a healthy profit.

One way to sell ads is to develop a successful website. This does take time, but it needn't take more than a couple of months if you promote it right. The topic of the website can be anything really, but you will do best if it is on a topic that is in demand and popular with a large number of people.

Once you have more than 100 visitors a day on a regular basis and growing, you could start by selling ads to people who would be interested in advertising on your site. You can either approach likely advertisers directly, or you could advertise for them, perhaps using free advertising sites.

Selling ads that are banner ads is probably the easiest, at least to begin with. Decide where the banner will be displayed and simply put it there. You will have to also decide how to charge for the ad display, and how much to charge.

One approach is to charge a flat rate per month. This is probably the easiest way. The most common way is CPM, or cost per thousand. For this you will have to install some kind of tracking software so you can know how many impressions a banner ad is getting. You would then charge the client a figure for every 1,000 times the banner ad is seen. CPM charges between $1 and $20 are common.

There are a number of banner networks you can join that will take most of the hard work away from you. They will pay you too, just for displaying banner ads from their clients. Always try to get ads that are targeted to the topic of your website, as this will pay you the best rate. Expect untargeted ads from banner networks to pay poorly.

The Google AdSense program is, in a way, a method of selling ads. You have to create a website that gets approved by the Google AdSense team. Once you have an AdSense account you can display AdSense ads on your website, and indeed, any other website you may have.

Because you are giving over a valuable space slot of your website for the ads, Google will pay you a percentage of the revenue they get from the advertiser. The amount you will get displaying Google AdSense ads will vary. It can be as little as a few cents per visitor click or as much as $20 per visitor click or even more.
